More than 70 students from the School of Natural and Physical Sciences at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) are left disappointed after being omitted from this year’s graduation list.
The affected students, who have met the required GPA and completed all necessary courses, gathered at the main campus in Port Moresby on Tuesday to voice their concerns with the school administration and parents.

The students, who flew in from various provinces and local residents, met with Professor Simon Saulei, Executive Officer Mr. Jason Alonk, and Pro-Vice Chancellor Academic and Student Affairs Professor Betty Lovai at Waigani Campus’ Science Building.
They demanded answers on why their names were not on the graduation list.
The SNPS Dean Professor Saulei and the Professor Lovai admitted to the students that they failed on their part due to their inconsistent administration failures and will address it appropriately as it is not the failure of the students who have met all necessary requirements as per the graduation eligibility requirements.
Professor Saulei assured the students that he would bring the issue to the attention of the Vice Chancellor, stating that the Senate is the final decision maker.
“I will take this whatever has been said and meet up with the VC to sort this issue out, I will try… I will relay the responses to you people, not today, but anytime this week,” he said.
The affected students are hopeful that the university administration, particularly the Vice Chancellor, will respond positively to their concerns.

One student, who preferred not to be named, noted that the Vice Chancellor has been active in addressing student issues in the past and is optimistic about a favorable outcome.
The students are now awaiting a decision from the school senate.
