Prominent Southern Highlands leader Peter Nupiri has condemned the recent roadblocks, threats, and intimidation at Nipa-Kutubu’s Sermin Village in Southern Highlands Province.
In a statement, Mr. Nupiri said the actions were unlawful and dangerous.
He said they were carried out by a small group of people linked to supporters of SHP provincial member William Powi and suspended Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited (KPHL) Managing Director, Wapu Sonk.
Mr. Nupiri said these individuals do not represent the Southern Highlands Province or its people.
He called on the National Government to enforce the Counter-Terrorism Act and send in security forces to restore peace and protect vital national infrastructure, including the Hela–SHP corridor and the PNG LNG Project.
He commended the KPHL Board for suspending Mr. Sonk to allow an independent investigation into allegations raised against him.
Mr. Nupiri said while Mr. Sonk has contributed to the petroleum sector, the allegations are serious and need to be dealt with through proper legal processes.
He welcomed the appointment of another SHP son Mr. Luke Liria as Acting Managing Director, saying he was confident in his leadership and professionalism.
Mr. Nupiri also criticized Mr Powi for his public support of Mr. Sonk.
He said the governor’s statements were reckless and incited lawlessness.
He reminded leaders not to use their positions to stir unrest or protect individuals facing serious allegations.
He appealed to the people of Southern Highlands and entire Papua New Guinea to rise above tribal politics and intimidation.
“Let us protect the credibility of our province, uphold the rule of law, and preserve the integrity of our national institutions,” Mr. Nupiri said in a statement.
