The Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) and PNG Government signed a K41 million contract to upgrade and seal a 10-kilometre section of road between Chabbai and Ton, a key transport corridor in Central Bougainville, at the Department of Works and Highways Headquarters in Port Moresby today.
The signing coincided with the appointment of new State Minister for Works and Highways Peter Tsiamalili Jnr who is the local regional member.
The contract was awarded to Raibro Construction Limited, a construction company that has been working in Bougainville for more than a decade and has delivered a number of major road and infrastructure projects across the region.
Speaking at the signing, ABG Minister for Infrastructure and Utilities, Hon. Patrick Nisira, described the occasion as a proud moment for Bougainville and Papua New Guinea.
“Today is a proud day for Bougainville and for Papua New Guinea. This project shows that the National Government stands with the people of Bougainville as we move towards our long-term development goals,” Minister Nisira said.
He thanked Prime Minister James Marape and Regional Member and newly appointed Minister for Works and Highways, Hon. Peter Tsiamalili Jnr, for their continued support for Bougainville’s infrastructure development.
“Your support is not taken for granted. You have been a strong voice for Bougainville in Waigani, and the results of that advocacy are clearly seen in projects like this,” he said.
Minister Nisira acknowledged the leadership of Works and Highways Secretary Gibson Holemba, Bougainville technical officers, and the Bougainville Administration for their work in preparing and finalizing the contract.
He also praised Raibro Construction Limited Managing Director, Ms. Jennifer Brown, and noted the company’s long-standing presence in Bougainville.
“Raibro Construction has worked in Bougainville for over a decade. Their experience and understanding of local conditions give us confidence that this project will be delivered to the required standard,” he said.
“The Kokopau–Arawa road is a critical economic and social lifeline, linking communities to markets, schools, health facilities and government services.
“Sealing the remaining unsealed sections is expected to improve road safety, reduce vehicle maintenance costs and support local economic growth”.
“We are not just building roads. We are restoring confidence, reconnecting communities and laying the physical foundations for Bougainville’s long-term development,” Minister Nisira said.
The Minister also highlighted the role of the Tax Credit Scheme (TCS) in supporting road development in Bougainville, while calling for the inclusion of the Peit Constituency access road in North Bougainville in future submissions to ensure inclusive development.
“This contract signing is more than a legal formality. It is a promise to our people that better days are coming through improved infrastructure and services,” he said.
