New connection proposals are temporarily on hold: CEO

Water PNG Limited has clarified that it has temporarily suspended receiving proposals from developers, seeking connections to water and sewerage services in Port Moresby.

Chief Executive Officer James Young, a Civil and Chemical engineer himself, told PNG SUN that the utility continues to engage with developers and relevant planning agencies.

Mr Young stressed the need to be transparent about current capacity limitations.

Responding to PNG SUN’s series of questions, he said the Water PNG Limited’s Board has imposed a temporary suspension on approving new developments in Port Moresby.

“This decision will remain in place until critical infrastructure upgrades are completed and system capacity is increased.

According to the Board, approving new developments at this time would further reduce service standards for existing customers.

CEO Young said it is currently unable to service new developments due to high levels of leakage in the existing network.

He explained that its priority is to fix the current system and protect public health.
The existing customers must not be disadvantaged by further strain on already limited infrastructure, he added.

“The practical message to developers is clear. Discussions and engagement will continue, but approvals can only be granted when they match real network capacity and have a sustainable funding pathway.”

He said this approach is necessary to ensure reliable water and sewerage services for Port Moresby residents now and into the future.
