PNG makes its mark at the global economic table

Prime Minister, James Marape says Papua New Guinea’s growing presence at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, reflects the country’s rising profile as a serious participant in global economic dialogue and investment conversations.
Speaking at a press conference upon his return to Port Moresby on Sunday evening, Prime Minister Marape said the 56th World Economic Forum brought together more than 70 Heads of State and Government, over 1,000 global business leaders, innovators, and major corporations, making it the largest gathering in the Forum’s history.
“This is where the world’s economic direction is discussed. Papua New Guinea was present, engaged, and listened to,” Prime Minister Marape said in a statement.
He noted that PNG’s consistent attendance at Davos has now firmly placed the country within the global family of nations, not only diplomatically but economically, as investors increasingly recognize PNG’s potential across resources, agriculture, clean energy, and emerging sectors.
The Prime Minister told local media that the theme of this year’s Forum, centered on partnership and dialogue, resonated strongly with PNG’s cultural values as a Pacific Christian nation that prioritizes dialogue, consensus, and peaceful solutions.
“Our culture teaches us to talk, to listen, and to find solutions together. That is exactly the spirit Davos promotes,” he said.
Prime Minister Marape confirmed he attended numerous high-level sessions and meetings, including closed-door discussions involving world leaders and major investors, where global economic fragility, supply chains, and growth strategies were openly discussed.
He said the Forum provided a rare opportunity to understand first-hand the divisions and uncertainties affecting the global economy, while also identifying areas where PNG can position itself strategically.
“The global economy is growing at around three percent, while Papua New Guinea is tracking closer to four percent. That tells us we are moving in the right direction,” he said.
The Prime Minister stressed that Davos is not a political or social event, but a serious economic platform where countries must actively promote their strengths.
“As Prime Minister, my responsibility is to ensure Papua New Guinea is visible, credible, and attractive to the right investors,” he said.
He added that PNG’s stable Constitutional system, independent Judiciary, and clear separation of powers were frequently raised as strengths by international stakeholders.
“Our laws and institutions are well respected. The opportunity before us is to convert that confidence into real economic outcomes for our people,” Prime Minister Marape said.
