The temporary closure, announced by the National Airports Corporation (NAC) due to security and safety risks, has been lifted-following the completion of a comprehensive safety and security risk assessment.
In a statement issued this evening, NAC acting managing director and CEO Dominic Kaumu advised the travelling public and stakeholders that the decision to reopen the airport was made after management was satisfied that all identified safety and security risks had been appropriately addressed.

“The Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary and the Papua New Guinea Defence Force have conducted investigations into the recent incident and have apprehended suspects in connection with the unlawful activities.
“Police and PNGDF personnel will continue to provide patrols around the airport perimeter and surrounding areas to ensure the safe and secure resumption of operations,” he said.
The Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued on Saturday, 28 February 2026, for the temporary closure was officially lifted at 4:00pm today, Sunday, 1 March 2026, he said.
“Airlines have been formally advised and will conduct their own operational and safety assessments prior to operating into Wewak. Passengers are encouraged to contact their respective airlines directly to confirm flight schedules.”
He has thanked the police, PNGDF, local authorities, airline partners and the local community for their cooperation and support during this period.
“NAC remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of aircraft and passengers at all times,” said Mr. Kaumu said.
