Prime Minister James Marape this morning announced that the President of the National Council of Women will be appointed as one of the three nominated Members of Parliament under the Constitution if the ruling Pangu Pati returns to power after the 2027 Papua New Guinea National General Election.
Speaking during celebrations marking International Women’s Day at the Sir Hubert Murray Stadium in Port Moresby, PM Marape said the move would ensure women have a stronger voice in national decision-making.
He said Pangu Pati hosting its national convention in a month’s time, adding he was drafting the blueprint of the ruling party.
He continued that Pangu helped birth the country with the production of the National Constitution.
PM Marape stated under Section 103 of the Constitution, which allows for the appointment of three nominated Members of Parliament, his party intends to allocate one of those seats to the head of the National Council of Women.
“Section 103 of our Constitution allows for three nominated Members of Parliament. If we return to government after the 2027 election, one of those seats will be reserved for the President of the National Council of Women, who will come in as an ex-officio Member of Parliament,” Marape said.
The Prime Minister said the proposal reflects his government’s commitment to recognizing the vital role women play in the development of the country.
“As we approach our 50th anniversary as a nation, we must acknowledge the contribution of mothers, daughters and women across our country who have helped build Papua New Guinea,” he said.
Mr. Marape said the move would help strengthen women’s representation in national leadership and policy discussions, particularly on issues affecting families and communities.
He urged men across the country to show greater respect and protection for women, stressing that the fight against domestic violence, abuse of their rights and empowerment must begin at home.
“A happy mother, a happy wife and a happy daughter will lead to a happy and secure society,” he said.
“Every man must take responsibility in his own home to respect and protect women before sorting it out in courts.”
PM Marape said the recognition of women must go beyond symbolic celebrations and become a daily practice in homes, workplaces and communities.
