Ok Tedi drives stronger safety culture across operations

Safety remains a core value at Ok Tedi Mining Limited (Ok Tedi), guiding every decision and operational outcome, the company said this week.

It said in a statement: “As Ok Tedi marks National Mine Safety Week from March 1 – 7, the company is reinforcing the importance of strong safety systems and a culture that protects lives and supports long-term strategic goals.

“Under the theme ‘Building and Sustaining an Effective Safety System and Culture,’ employees and business partners are encouraged to move beyond compliance and take shared ownership of safety.”

Throughout the week, Ok Tedi is delivering targeted activities aimed at strengthening frontline safety behaviors. These include toolbox talks, observation and interaction sessions, leadership walk-arounds and practical refreshers — designed to improve hazard awareness, decision-making and personal readiness.

Key focus areas include:

• Effective risk management tools such as Take 5 and Job Safety Analysis

• Observation and Interaction to support early intervention

• Visible leadership in the field

• Application of Critical Controls and Life Saving Rules

• Managing fatigue, distraction and routine risks

“Safety underpins Ok Tedi’s Growth 2050 Strategy, enabling operational stability, asset integrity and disciplined delivery.

“Strengthening systems and behaviors ensures a workforce that is protected, supported and ready to meet future demands,” it said.

Ok Tedi Manager Safety Malcolm Maddison highlighted the need for systems that are both effective and sustainable, noting that everyone — from senior leaders to new apprentices-has a role in strengthening Ok Tedi’s safety culture.

The week’s activities reinforce Ok Tedi’s commitment to safer workplaces, stronger leadership visibility and improved confidence in risk management, ensuring employees return home safely.

Ok Tedi continues to uphold its safety commitment: “Nobody Gets Hurt, Zero Harm.”
