The conference was organized by the university’s Centre for Research and Innovation.
It brought together academics, researchers, business leaders, government officials, IT professionals, postgraduate students, entrepreneurs and technology innovators.
Participants discussed how artificial intelligence can support business development, governance and economic growth in Papua New Guinea.
Secretary of the Department of Information and Communication Technology, Steven Matainaho, said technology must always serve a clear purpose or provide solutions to our problems.
“Technology without a use case means nothing. It must create value for people and contribute to economic growth as highlighted in the conference theme,” he said.
Secretary Matainaho also spoke about the development of the SevisPass Wallet application, describing it as an example of innovation that allows citizens to access important personal data after registration.
Through the system, he said, people can open a Mi Bank account within minutes and access services such as police clearance and medical certificates.
He thanked the university for taking the initiative to host the conference, encouraging research on technology and innovation.
Mr. Matainaho continued that, strong policies and innovation can help drive the country’s development.
John Pulu, who is the General Manager of DATEC PNG, said technology continues to move rapidly and artificial intelligence is already shaping economies, industries and governments around the world.
“For Papua New Guinea, AI is not only a technology trend. It is an opportunity for us as a nation to move forward in our technology journey,” he said.
He added that AI can improve accuracy, speed up data analysis and create more efficient services.
Acting Vice Chancellor Glory Sujitha Antony thanked participants for attending the conference and for choosing a theme that connects business, government and economics.
“Universities, especially IBSUniversity as the host, are places where new ideas and innovations are developed to shape the leaders of tomorrow,” she said.
She also expressed hope that the National Conference would bring positive outcomes for the country.
The day-one conference ended with a vote of thanks by Thirumal Raman, Controller of Examinations and conference convener.
