PNG Prime Minister James Marape says the Government will use the remaining parliamentary sittings before the 2027 National General Election to pass pending legislation and complete outstanding government business.
Mr. Marape told a press conference at Melanesian Haus in Port Moresby yesterday morning that Cabinet would finalize its legislative priorities this week when Parliament resumes, with the Government expected to outline its agenda for the sitting later today.
He also announced plans for a national consultation on election preparations involving the Electoral Commission, political parties, civil society groups and other stakeholders amid growing public concern over the country’s readiness for the 2027 polls.
Mr. Marape said Parliament had limited sitting days left in the current term and the Government wanted to maximize the remaining time to complete key legislative work.
“Our Parliament Sitting Days are now running short for this Term, and we want to make full use of the remaining time to pass important Laws and conclude outstanding Government Business,” he said in a statement.
Mr. Marape said the consultation process would include both Government and Opposition parties as well as groups outside Parliament to discuss election planning and transparency.
“There has been a lot of Public Commentary about Election preparations. I want to assure the country that our government stands ready to support the Electoral process to the best of our ability, so every citizen has a fair opportunity to Vote for Leaders of their choice,” he said.
He said the Government wanted an open process to ensure all stakeholders were informed and involved ahead of the election.
Mr. Marape said maintaining political stability and credible electoral processes remained important as Papua New Guinea moved beyond 50 years of Independence.
