A 29-year-old woman living with a physical disability has returned to school through Flexible Open and Distance Education (FODE), determined to achieve her goal of becoming a qualified accountant while continuing full-time employment.
Kerry Kawowo, of mixed Kerema and Alotau parentage and residing in Tokarara in Port Moresby, recently enrolled at the NCD Provincial FODE Centre to complete her Grade-8 education as part of her long-term career ambitions.
Born with an orthopedic impairment that resulted in paralysis, Ms. Kawowo said she refused to allow her circumstances to limit her future and instead chose to continue building her education and professional skills.
Currently employed as a Finance Procurement and Administration Officer at Hilton Hotel, she developed accounting knowledge through self-learning before deciding to pursue formal qualifications to strengthen her career opportunities.
Her commitment received recognition from FODE PNG Principal Anthony Rayappan, who described her determination as an inspiration to students and others seeking to continue their education.
To support her studies, FODE provided Ms. Kawowo with a tablet, school uniforms and full sponsorship of her course fees.
Mr. Rayappan encouraged people living with disabilities to consider opportunities available through Flexible Open and Distance Education and said access to education should remain available to everyone.
Balancing work responsibilities with her studies, Ms. Kawowo said she hopes her journey encourages others to continue pursuing their goals regardless of age or personal circumstances.
Her story highlights the role education can play in creating opportunities and demonstrates how persistence and long-term commitment can help individuals pursue their ambitions.
