The ruling Pangu Pati has reaffirmed its leadership team following its 28th National Convention hosted last week, positioning the party for continuity and stability ahead of the 2027 National General Elections.
Writs for the next election will be issued on April 29.
Prime Minister James Marape was retained as Party Leader alongside the re-election of key office bearers and regional leaders.

They include Deputy Prime Minister John Rosso, Momase Regional Leader Joe Sungi, Highlands Regional Leader William Powi, Southern Regional Leader Soroi Eoe, New Guinea Islands Regional Leader Ian Ling-Stuckey, Party President Erigeri Singin and Public Officer Morris Tovebae.
All elected officials will serve until the next national convention.
Pangu Pati General-Secretary Morris Tovebae in a statement yesterday described the outcome as a strong endorsement of party unity and democratic leadership, saying the reaffirmation reflected members’ confidence in the party’s direction and leadership as it prepares for the next national election.
Mr. Tovebae said the process demonstrated the party’s commitment to accountability, transparency and good governance.
“By placing leadership before members through a free and fair election, leaders strengthen democratic legitimacy, selfless service and accountability while recognizing the collective wisdom of those they serve,” he said.
Reflecting on the party’s progress over the last five years, Mr. Tovebae said Pangu Pati had invested heavily in strengthening its organizational structures and supporting institutional reforms to improve political governance in Papua New Guinea.
He said the party had worked with stakeholders, including the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties and Candidates, to strengthen the role and responsibilities of political parties beyond electoral competition.
“Political parties are critical pillars of democracy. They must help shape policy, build leadership and contribute positively to the country’s development agenda,” he said.
Mr. Tovebae said the party’s vision aligns with the aspirations highlighted during Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations in September 2025.
He said the country must move from political independence towards greater economic independence over the next five decades through sustainable development, economic empowerment and improved living standards.
As Papua New Guinea’s founding political party, Mr. Tovebae said Pangu Pati has a responsibility to lead national policy discussions and deliver practical outcomes for citizens.
He said the successful convention and reaffirmation of leadership positions leave the party well placed to face future opportunities and challenges as it prepares for the 2027 National General Elections and continues its nation-building agenda.
