The launch, held at the college in Arawa, brought together representatives from the Autonomous Bougainville Government, Australian High Commission Port Moresby, Australia Awards, college leadership, students, family, friends and local stakeholders.

Through this partnership, Australia Awards will initially support 14 students currently completing their final year of study to graduate with a Diploma in General Nursing, helping build a stronger pipeline of locally trained health professionals for Bougainville.

As a partner tertiary institution, Bougainville College of Nursing will also be eligible for dedicated support to strengthen teaching and learning, improve student services, develop staff capability, and build partnerships with Australian institutions.

Principal of Bougainville College of Nursing and 2025 Women in Leadership Yumi Stap Wantaim Alumni Awardee Celyn Tusalah said the partnership represents a significant opportunity for Bougainville’s young people and for the health sector more broadly.

“We are profoundly grateful for Australia Awards dedication which serves as a beacon of hope for our students.

“We recognize that your decision to align with Bougainville College of Nursing is a testament to your shared vision of excellence, progress and opportunity.”

“You have chosen to be champions of education empowering these young minds to make a tangible difference in our communities as a whole,” Ms. Tusalah said.

Australia said in a statement that it remains committed to supporting Bougainville through education partnerships that deliver practical, long-term impact and that responds to local priorities.

“Investing in tertiary institutions such as the Bougainville College of Nursing helps build local capability, strengthens essential services and creates opportunities for future leaders to contribute to Bougainville’s development,” it said in a statement.
