The inaugural PNG Contemporary Bilum and Arts Creation Show has been officially recognized as a national cultural event.
It has secured its place on Papua New Guinea’s national cultural events calendar and establishing it as an annual showcase for local artists and cultural practitioners.

Held at Sir John Guise Stadium from May 30–31, the event attracted participants from East Sepik, Morobe, Madang, Western, Jiwaka and the National Capital District, highlighting the diversity and creativity of Papua New Guinea’s cultural industries.
National Cultural Commission (NCC) Executive Director Steven Enomb Kilanda said the event’s elevation to national status would strengthen efforts to preserve cultural heritage while creating new opportunities for artists, bilum makers and artisans to showcase and market their work.
Mr. Kilanda thanked the National Capital District Commission, sponsors and event partners for supporting the successful delivery of the inaugural show.
He said the event demonstrated the growing importance of cultural industries in promoting both heritage and economic participation.
The two-day program featured exhibitions of traditional and contemporary bilums alongside paintings, carvings, jewelry and other locally produced artworks.
Bilums remained the centerpiece of the event, with mothers and artisans presenting distinctive designs that reflected the identities, traditions and stories of their respective provinces and communities.
One of the major highlights was a cultural fashion showcase featuring contemporary bilum-inspired designs that combined traditional craftsmanship with modern fashion concepts.
NCDC Manager Communications and Public Engagements Xavier Wablasu described the event as an important platform for cultural preservation, public participation and economic empowerment.
Organizers said strong public interest and participation in the inaugural event had created momentum for future editions and would expand opportunities for artists and bilum makers across the country.
