Brace for tough times as El Niño, rising fuel prices and high import costs tighten grip on our country: PM Marape to his citizens

Prime Minister James Marape has urged Papua New Guineans to prepare for tougher economic conditions as high fuel prices, rising import costs and El Niño threaten household budgets, food supplies and livelihoods nationwide.

PM Marape in a statement yesterday said Papua New Guinea was part of an interconnected global economy and could not escape the impact of international conflicts, particularly in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, on energy prices and the cost of living.

“I want to advise our people to tighten their seat belts and prepare for difficult times ahead,” Prime Minister Marape said.

“We are living in a global economy where events taking place thousands of kilometers away affect us directly. Fuel prices remain high, imported goods are becoming more expensive, and we cannot expect immediate relief.

“These challenges are being compounded by El Niño, which is already affecting communities across our country, including our remote islands and rural areas.”

Prime Minister Marape said advice received by the Government indicated that the effects of El Niño could continue through the remainder of 2026 and into early 2027.

He appealed to citizens to exercise financial discipline, conserve resources and avoid unnecessary spending.

“This is not the time to waste money on excessive drinking, cigarettes, gambling and other unnecessary activities,” he said.

“Save whatever money you can. Prioritise food, water, medicine, education and the wellbeing of your families.

“I also urge our people to avoid lighting unnecessary fires, protect food gardens and conserve water during these dry conditions.”

Prime Minister Marape called on all provincial and district administrators to immediately strengthen preparedness and ensure assistance reaches communities affected by drought and other El Niño-related conditions.

“Every provincial administrator and district administrator must be close to our people during these difficult times,” he said.

“If our people need food, provide food. If they need water, find ways to supply water. If they need medicine, ensure they receive medicine.

“No community should be forgotten, and no citizen whom we can assist should be left without help.

“Government resources must be used responsibly and directed towards essential relief supplies, including food, water and medicines.”

Prime Minister Marape said the National Disaster Office would maintain oversight of the situation nationwide, working with provincial and district authorities to coordinate assistance.

“The Government will do its absolute best to assist every part of our country, and our development partners are also prepared to support us where possible,” he said.

Prime Minister Marape appealed to Papua New Guineans to strengthen traditional family, clan, church and community support systems during the difficult period ahead.

“Our greatest strength has always been our people and our willingness to help one another,” he said.

“This is the time for our traditional wantok system and community spirit to come alive.

“If your neighbour has no food and you have enough, share what you can. If a family needs water or assistance, help wherever possible.

“Government alone cannot solve every problem. We must all take responsibility for our families, communities and country.

“We have faced natural disasters and economic hardships before, and we have overcome them through unity, discipline and resilience.

“I ask our people not to panic, but to prepare. Save your money, conserve water, protect your gardens and look after one another.

“Together, we will get through these difficult times.”
