The Doulos Hope has arrived in Port Moresby, bringing humanitarian assistance and a message of hope to communities in the National Capital District and Central Province.
Working in partnership with Operation Mobilization, the ship’s outreach teams have been serving local communities through practical assistance and Christian ministry.
Operation Mobilization National Director Mr. Gabriel Markus has served with the organization since 1999.
A native of East Sepik Province, he was born and raised in Rabaul, East New Britain.
During more than 25 years of overseas mission work, Mr. Markus has travelled to 50 countries, including Nepal, where he was arrested twice for sharing his faith, as well as the Maldives.
One of Doulos Hope’s recent outreach programs saw 50 teams of crew members travel across Central Province and the National Capital District to provide water purification, eye examinations and free prescription glasses to residents of Papa-Lealea, Porebada, Barakau and Tubusere villages, as well as other communities in NCD.
Reflecting on his years abroad, Mr. Markus said, “Over 25 years overseas, I felt like a foreigner in my own country. I learned to adapt quickly to help my family again.”
The vessel will remain in Port Moresby for one month before continuing its Pacific voyage. It is also scheduled to visit Rabaul, Lae, Madang and Kavieng.
Mr. Markus said the organization’s mission extends beyond humanitarian work.
“God is calling us to preach, help and bring people into the light.
There are so many people yet to know Jesus,” he said.
Doulos Hope’s vision is to share knowledge, help and hope with people around the world.
Mr. Markus said the ship will conclude its Pacific tour in September.
