Three final‑year architecture and construction management students from the Papua New Guinea University of Technology (Unitech) have commenced industrial training on the Lae Main Market Redevelopment project, marking an important step in building local technical capacity.
Supported by Australia, the placements provide hands‑on experience that strengthens PNG’s skilled workforce and prepares graduates to lead future infrastructure projects.

The trainees will complete 450 hours of structured, on‑the‑job learning covering site management, construction techniques, workplace safety, quality assurance, and exposure to real‑time project challenges that cannot be replicated in the classroom.
The placement is a formal and assessable requirement of their degree programs.
Trainee Ms. Renee Tibong described the opportunity as “overwhelming and exciting,” adding “I truly believe this came at the right time.
“Working alongside experienced supervisors has been a valuable learning experience and has helped me grow and gain confidence.”
Fellow trainee Ms. Lavina Cliff said the project has strengthened her motivation: “Being part of an important project like the Lae Market inspires me to give my best. It’s a chance to step out of the classroom and apply what we’ve learned.”
The program also reflects Australia’s commitment to GEDSI (Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion) and climate resilience.
Trainee Ms. Delencia Bibiken said, “I feel supported as a female trainee and confident that the project is looking after both people and the community.”
This first cohort marks the beginning of a series of ongoing student placements throughout the life of the redevelopment, ensuring young people in Lae can meaningfully contribute to building the city’s new market.
The Lae Market Redevelopment is maximizing local participation, with PNG firms delivering a high‑quality, climate‑resilient build.
More than 90 per cent of the 200 construction workers on site are from the local community.
The project will also support 18 trade trainees (10 women and 8 men), six Unitech student placements, and 10 internships for unemployed youth.
The Lae Market Redevelopment is led by Australia in partnership with New Zealand and the Lae City Authority.
