Govt coalition SDP urges fellow parties to endorse quality leaders as it launches its website, new Gordons head Office

As the fourth largest coalition party in the Marape-Rosso Government, Social Democratic Party (SDP) launched its new website and Gordons Head Office in Port Moresby on Monday, Parliamentary wing leader Powes Parkop has urged fellow political parties to endorse qualified, professional and proven leaders for the 2027 National General Election.

The party has six members of parliament-Wewak MP Stanley Mutz Samban, Health Minister Billy Joseph, Foreign Affairs Minister Justin Tkatchenko, Milne Bay Governor Gordon Wesley, NCD Governor Powes Parkop and Ijivitari MP David Arore.

He warned that that poor candidate selection could undermine efforts to address Papua New Guinea’s major challenges.

Governor Parkop said only quality leadership could provide solutions to the country’s ongoing law and order problems, economic crisis, social issues and climate challenges.

He said the 2027 election would be a major challenge not only for the SDP and all political parties but, more importantly, for the people of Papua New Guinea.

“All the parties will go out there to present their candidates with their platforms. It is an important exercise that the people must take seriously, and the political party leaders must also take seriously,” he said.”

Governor Parkop added: “We can’t hold elections just for the numbers. You can get the numbers and win the election, and you might form the government, but how are you going to respond to the social, economic, and different challenges that the nation is going through?”

The event was attended by intending candidates from across the country, Party executives, sponsors and supporters.

With six months to go before the 2027 National General Election, he said its new office and website set a new benchmark for political party organization in the country.

Governor Parkop said the facilities would strengthen the Party’s compliance with constitutional laws and the requirements of the Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates Commission (IPPCC), which governs political parties in PNG.

He said many parties in the past had operated without proper offices and structures, but the SDP was demonstrating what a modern, accountable political party should look like.

Governor Parkop said the website was a strategic step towards improving communication with intending candidates, sponsors, supporters and the general public.

With misinformation and disinformation spreading rapidly on social media, he said the Party needed its own official channel to verify facts and communicate its policies.

Reafirming the Party’s motto, “We Deliver,” he said the platform would ensure accurate and timely information about the Party’s policies, parliamentary work and development agenda reached the public directly and without distortion.

“This website will be the official and credible source of information for all media organizations. It will carry our official statements, policies, and updates on what SDP is delivering for the country,” Governor Parkop said.

He said the platform would promote transparency and accountability while helping counter misinformation, which he described as one of the biggest threats to democracy and good governance ahead of the elections.

Governor Parkop added that the website would also serve as a civic education tool, enabling young voters, first-time voters and rural communities with internet access to understand the SDP’s core principles of social justice, equal opportunity, the rule of law and sustainable development.

He urged all political parties to raise the standard of political campaigning and focus on policy debates rather than money politics, tribal voting and personality cults, which he said had continued to undermine national development.

Leader Parkop said the website would serve as the central hub for official Party news, press releases and event coverage, including the nationwide candidate selection process, campaign schedule and manifesto launch in the coming months.
