NCD Governor Powes Parkop celebrated his 64th birthday last night at the Crown Hotel in Port Moresby.
It was not a grand event open to public, but a very small cake-cutting-dinner event hosted to celebrate his 64-year journey from his M’Buke Island in Manus, education pushed migration, education life, professional life and political life.
The dinner was attended by a handful of guests including friends and families. Some relatives travelled all the way from Manus to become part of this event.
On this special day, various speakers acknowledged Governor Parkop’s unwavering commitment to transformative leadership transforming a colonial enclave to a thriving city, inclusive urban development, human rights, gender equality, peace and zero-tolerance on violence, and a safer, more resilient capital city.
The dinner was told Governor Parkop’s vision for Port Moresby continues to shape policies and programs that place people, opportunity, and sustainable growth at the center of development.
Governor Parkop’s leadership has been marked by bold reforms, strong advocacy for social inclusion, and a clear focus on planning for the future of our city in the face of rapid urbanization.
They thanked him for his service and dedication to the residents of the National Capital District and the country as a whole, wishing him good health, strength, and continued wisdom as he leads NCD forward.
Governor Parkop announced also that he was not retiring from politics, citing his vision to end settlements in Port Moresby still has got outstanding works to do.
He called on intending candidates to provide their alternative policies.
“So, let’s put everything to rest. I’m still fit. I’m fitter than all these young men and women who are trying to come up and get wrestle for the seat. When I’m ready in my time is up, I will tell everyone and make the announcement.”
“People can wait until I announce my retirement. And that’s not happening in 2027.
My mind is still sharp and physically, I’m still good. Emotionally. I’m still good spiritually,” he said.
