Jireh Widuh, 55, from Yangoru in East Sepik Province, is calling on the National Government to create a dedicated portfolio for people living with disabilities (PLWD) in Parliament.
Born without four limbs, Widuh has been residing at Cheshire Homes in Port Moresby for almost 39 years. Despite his condition, he remains active and determined to advocate for others like him.

Speaking last week, Widuh said that since Papua New Guinea gained independence in 1975 until today, but there has been no representation of PLWD people on the floor of Parliament to address their issues.
“There is an absence of representatives for people with special abilities in Parliament. The Government should create a portfolio for us,” he said.
Widuh said the Government must seriously look into the challenges faced by people with special needs, particularly those living in urban centres.
He revealed that he survives on a monthly allowance of K50 from the Cheshire Homes Centre, which he says is not enough to meet basic needs.
“Government should help assist us in terms of our basic needs and wants,” he said.
Despite the challenges, Widuh moves around the city with the help of his wheelsman, a friend who voluntarily assists him despite having no family connection.
A determined Widuh said his hope is to one day become a leading advocate and the voice for PLWD in the country.
