During the press conference, he spoke about Papua New Guinea’s growing relationship with France and the European Union.

“I want to announce that I will be engaging with France and the European Union during this visit. France is an important country in Western Europe and plays a significant role in global affairs,” he said.

Mr. Marape said the relationship between Papua New Guinea and France has continued to strengthen over the years.

“This partnership did not begin during my term as Prime Minister alone. Since President Macron took office in 2020, both countries have continued to strengthen cooperation, including in education and other bilateral programs. We have built a very positive relationship with France,” he added.

Prime Minister Marape also highlighted Papua New Guinea’s growing influence in the Pacific region and internationally, particularly following the recent Polynesian Ocean Summit.

“Last week, we welcomed leaders not only from the Pacific, but also from the United Nations and ASEAN countries. PNG is becoming increasingly important in connecting the Pacific and Southeast Asia with other parts of the world,” he said.

Mr. Marape said his visit to France would focus on continuing discussions and strengthening ties with French leaders.

“I want to meet with the leaders of France, including the President, to continue the work and discussions we have started over the last few years,” he said.

He stressed that economic growth remains the main driver behind Papua New Guinea’s international partnerships.

“At the center of all these bilateral engagements is the economic growth of our country. The European Union remains an important market for many of our products,” he said.

Mr. Marape also spoke about trade opportunities between PNG and European countries.

“Although our countries are far apart, modern trade has made business easier and nations more connected around the world,” he added.

The Prime Minister described France as an important member of the G7 and a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

He said Papua New Guinea could benefit from stronger ties with France and other global partners.

Mr. Marape further said French President Emmanuel Macron has shown strong interest in Papua New Guinea and its development.

“President Macron has supported partnerships involving health, environmental protection, and development programs between France, Germany, and Papua New Guinea. There is already a major program worth close to 120 million euros supporting these efforts,” he said.

Mr. Marape also acknowledged the support provided by the French Government over the past two years through various cooperation programs.

“One of the projects under discussion is the Rabaul Port extension program. This includes soft-loan arrangements and long-term financial support,” he added.

He said he plans to discuss the future of the Rabaul Port project directly with the French President during his visit.

“I will discuss with the French President possible support for the Rabaul Port project and other agreements that can benefit Papua New Guinea and strengthen our partnership with France and other countries,” he concluded.
