PM Marape invites political leaders to dialogue on 2027 Election preparation

Prime Minister James Marape has invited leaders from government and opposition political parties to attend a dialogue on preparations for the 2027 National General Election as part of efforts to ensure a credible and transparent polling process.

The meeting, to be held at Melanesian Haus in Port Moresby, will provide political leaders with a detailed briefing from the Electoral Commission on the status of election preparations, key challenges and planned improvements ahead of the national vote.

In a statement, Mr. Marape said the Government was committed to delivering a properly resourced, fair and transparent election in 2027 and wanted political parties to play an active role in strengthening the electoral process through consultation and feedback.

The Prime Minister is expected to attend the session alongside Electoral Commission officials and political party representatives, while Administrative Services Minister Richard Masere has extended invitations to relevant stakeholders to participate in the discussions.

“My government is committed to ensuring that the 2027 National General Election is adequately resourced to the best of our ability and conducted fairly for every candidate, political party and voter across our country,” Mr. Marape said.

“This consultation process is important because elections belong to the people and all stakeholders must understand exactly where preparations currently stand, what challenges exist, and what improvements can be made together.”

Mr. Marape said the session would also provide political leaders with the opportunity to contribute views and recommendations as preparations continue.

“These consultation sessions are important because awareness and transparency are essential to building confidence in our electoral processes.”

“We want all political parties to understand the preparation status and to contribute ideas that can strengthen the election process.”

The Electoral Commissioner and Electoral Commission officials are expected to provide detailed briefings during the session.

Mr. Marape said he would personally attend the meeting from 8:30am to 10:00am to demonstrate the Government’s commitment to an inclusive and transparent electoral process.

“I encourage all leaders to participate fully because credible elections are fundamental to democracy and the future stability of our country,” he said.
