PNG Ports Corporation Limited has donated K100,000 to the East New Britain Provincial Administration to support families affected by the recent sea tragedy in East New Britain Province.
The donation was presented as the company expressed solidarity with the province during a time of mourning and extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives at sea.
PNG Ports Chairman Harvey Nii, on behalf of the board, management and staff, said the company stood with the people of East New Britain during the difficult period.
“PNG Ports stands with the people of East New Britain Province during this difficult time.
Our company has had a long history with East New Britain,” Mr. Nii said in a statement.
“Our Rabaul Port sits on the beautiful Simpson Harbour within East New Britain, and as such, we are committed to supporting communities in times of tragedy.
“We remain steadfast in our role as a partner to the people of Papua New Guinea, extending support not only through our operations but also by standing alongside communities in moments of hardship.”
Mr. Nii also urged the public to exercise caution when travelling by sea, particularly during harsh weather conditions.
East New Britain Governor Michael Marum thanked PNG Ports for the donation, describing it as a timely gesture of compassion.
“On behalf of the families of the victims and the people of East New Britain Province, I extend my deepest appreciation to PNG Ports for this donation,” Governor Marum said.
“Such acts of compassion during difficult times demonstrate the importance of solidarity and service to the people of Papua New Guinea.”
PNG Ports said its support reflected its long-standing relationship with East New Britain, where Rabaul Port serves as one of the country’s major maritime gateways.
The port facilitates trade with smaller island provinces, including Kavieng, Buka and other non-PNG Ports-managed ports.
It accounts for about five per cent of Papua New Guinea’s imports and 10 per cent of exports, while handling the country’s third-largest volume of containerized trade.
The company said the port’s vital role in supporting trade and livelihoods also carried a responsibility to stand alongside communities during times of hardship.
PNG Ports said its contribution reflected its broader commitment to building resilient, safe and supported communities across Papua New Guinea.
