PNG Police Commissioner, David Manning, has reassured the public that the current airing of grievances by members of the PNGDF within their barracks is being closely monitored, with police maintaining a strong presence across the city.
Commissioner Manning assured Port Moresby residents that it remains business as usual.
“A high-visibility police presence will continue, providing reassurance that residents of our nation’s capital can go about their daily lives as usual,” the Commissioner said in a statement today.
“Business continues, school lessons continue, and our residents can be confident to go about their daily lives as usual.”
Commissioner Manning said police will continue surveillance on the movements and communications of known criminals around the city, with tactical units on standby to respond to any potential troublemakers.
“The RPNGC has a highly visible presence in Port Moresby following the airing of grievances by some members of the PNGDF overnight. There were no significant incidents, though there have been some road closures near Murray Barracks, and these are being resolved.
“The matter is confined to the barracks, where defense personnel are discussing their issues.
“Defense personnel have requested that police prevent the public from entering the area where they have gathered to discuss grievances. Police are therefore maintaining checkpoints on streets leading into the barracks.
The military has its own internal policing capacity that is maintaining calm within their facilities, while police maintain security outside the barracks.
“The public and businesses can rest assured that this matter is being dealt with. Please do not believe social media rumors that include old photos and videos being circulated.”
Commissioner Manning said police will continue to ensure calm on the streets, warning that any potential troublemakers will face swift action.
“Security agencies are monitoring known criminals and activists. If any troublemakers begin gathering in groups or planning disruptions, they will be shut down and detained.
“If called upon, highly trained and well-armed Tactical Response Police will use a measured level of force to prevent criminal activities.”
“I call on our communities to let cooler heads prevail and allow the professional members of our Defense Force to address their issues internally, without external influence.”
