The Media Council of Papua New Guinea (MCPNG) has condemned the assault on The National newspaper journalist Rebecca Kuku and is demanding a full, independent police investigation.

The incident occurred last Friday when Ms. Kuku was confronted by five male Correctional Service officers as she arrived at Correctional Service Headquarters to attend a press conference.
The officers questioned her over an article reporting injuries sustained by prisoners at Bomana Correctional Service.
During the confrontation, one officer allegedly punched her on the ear while another attempted to slap her.
Ms. Kuku reported the incident to her editor and later filed a formal police complaint.
Acting Assistant Police Commissioner for NCD and Central Command Benjamin Turi has also called for an investigation, saying those responsible must be brought to account.
Prime Minister James Marape had earlier ordered an investigation into the Bomana prison incident.
