POLIO OUTBREAK ALERT: IMMEDIATE ACTIONS NEEDED

Acting Health Secretary Ken Wai has confirmed a Polio Outbreak in PNG. Poliovirus Type 2 was found in two healthy children in Lae City on 8 May 2025.

This is the same area where the virus was earlier found in the environment.

He said the virus is linked to a strain found in Indonesia.

This shows that the virus is spreading in the community.

All Provincial Health Authorities must act now.
Secretary Wai has issued Circular Instructions No. 56/2025.

He has asked all CEOs to urgently do the following:

1. Activate Provincial Emergency Operation Centers.

2. Strengthen AFP surveillance to find polio cases early.

3. Improve environmental surveillance.

4. Increase routine immunization for all children.

5. Prepare for a national polio vaccination campaign.

So far this year, 26 polio cases were reported in 10 provinces.

11 provinces have not reported, which may mean cases are being missed.

Routine immunization coverage is too low in most provinces.

All provinces must use their resources now to protect children.

We can stop the spread of polio if we act fast, said Mr. Wai.
