Governor-General, Sir Bob Dadae has officially launched the presence of Commonwealth Games King’s Baton Relay onshore at Government House in Port Moresby this week.
In a statement, Sir Bob said, “It is with great honor and a deep sense of national pride that I welcome you all to the official launch of the King’s Baton Relay in Papua New Guinea.”
He added that this occasion marks a significant moment for our nation as we once again take our place within the shared journey of the Commonwealth; a journey that brings together nations and peoples through sport, culture, and enduring values.
The King’s Baton, launched by His Majesty King Charles III on March 10, 2025, has travelled through the Americas, Africa, Caribbean, and Asia, and is now in the Oceania region, after spending its last day in the Solomon Islands.
Sir Bob highlighted the significance of the King’s Baton, saying, “For Papua New Guinea, the presence of the King’s Baton is both symbolic and deeply meaningful. It marks a time for national pride and thoughtful reflection of our identity as a people while reaffirming our place within the wider Commonwealth and the global community.”
The PNG King’s Baton features three distinct faces, showcasing national identity, sports, cultural motifs, and heritage. The baton was proudly decorated by Papua New Guinean artist Mr. Jameson Agwi.
Sir Bob emphasized the importance of sport in bringing Papua New Guineans together, saying, “Sport has always played a powerful role in bringing Papua New Guineans together. It unites communities across regions, languages, and traditions and provides inspiration and purpose, particularly for our young people.”
The Governor-General reaffirmed PNG’s commitment to Commonwealth values and sport as a tool for unity and development, declaring the King’s Baton Relay officially launched in PNG.
The event was attended by dignitaries, including Hon. Kinoka Feo, Minister for Sports, Higher Education, Research Science & Technology, Hon. Powes Parkop, Governor for NCD, and representatives from the diplomatic corps.
The King’s Baton Relay is a call to action, reminding Papua New Guineans to invest in youth, promote healthy lifestyles, protect the environment, and ensure sport remains a force for inclusion and equality.
Sir Bob concluded, “May God bless our athletes, May God bless the Independent State of Papua New Guinea. And may God bless the Commonwealth of Nations.”
