Enga Governor Sir Peter Ipatas says that the Togoba to Porgera Road, known as part of the Okuk Highway, urgently needs upgrades to meet National Highway Standards.
He raised the issue this morning in a question without notice to the Minister for Works and Highways Peter Tsiamalili Jnr.

Sir Peter emphasized that the country’s economy is largely supported by the mining industry, with Porgera Mining being a major contributor for over 30 years.
“The people of Enga, including the legitimate landowners of Porgera Mining, must have access to livable conditions and standard national government services in the province,” Governor Sir Ipatas told Parliament.
He added: “I am referring specifically to the Togoba road in the Western Highlands that connects to the Porgera Highway in Enga, which currently does not meet National Highway Standards.”
“My question is raised out of concern for the future generations of the people of Enga,” Sir Ipatas pointed out.
“One day Porgera Mine will cease operations, and the current construction of the Enga Highway must reflect the legacy of Porgera Mining in Enga Province.”
“Therefore, my question was directed to the National Government, through the office of the Works and Highways Department, to upgrade the Togoba-Porgera Highway to national standards,” he said.
In response, Minister Tsiamalili firstly thanked Sir Peter for his leadership and collaboration with Sir John Pundari, the Police Minister, in addressing the Gun Amnesty and Buy-Back Program in Enga and maintaining law and order.
Minister Tsiamalili said: “Last week, under my ministry, we conducted a meeting and agreed that we will have two road links to the mining companies in the country, so that in times of danger, we can use one or the other to maintain mining operations.”
“Regarding your question, as the minister responsible, I request that you provide a formal letter to the department so we can take the necessary action.”
