Trainee Communications Officer’s graduation highlights Ok Tedi’s investment in PNG’s future

Ok Tedi Mining Limited is investing in Papua New Guinea’s future workforce through its Graduate Development Scheme, with Divine Word University communications graduate Abbra Ntumy completing two years of workplace training in Tabubil.

For many young Papua New Guineans, graduating from university marks the end of one chapter and the uncertain beginning of another.

For Ms. Ntumy, that uncertainty became an opportunity through Ok Tedi Mining Limited’s Graduate Development Scheme (GDS).

Her graduation at the 39th combined GDS, Preferred Area Development (PAD) and Competency Base Training Programmes Graduation Ceremony in Tabubil marked a milestone for her and the family members, friends and mentors who supported her journey.

A communications graduate from Divine Word University, Ms. Ntumy spent the past two years learning what it means to transition from the classroom into a demanding and dynamic workplace.

Like many graduates before her, she arrived with academic knowledge but discovered that success also depends on relationships, resilience and a willingness to keep learning.

“One of the greatest lessons I have learned is the value of continuous learning and the importance of building relationships,” she said.

“The support, mentorship and guidance we received throughout the programme helped transform theory into practical experience and gave us confidence in our ability to contribute.”

Ms. Ntumy said her graduation also recognised the sacrifices made by parents, guardians, relatives and communities who supported the graduates through years of study and encouraged them to pursue their ambitions.

She acknowledged that although every graduate has a different story, their achievements are rarely theirs alone.

“Behind every graduate is a family that believed in them, supported them and made sacrifices so they could pursue their dreams.”

“This achievement belongs not only to us, but also to our families and communities who helped make it possible.”

She said the programme broadened her understanding of the business and strengthened her appreciation of the role communications plays in connecting people, sharing stories and supporting organizational goals.

It also gave her greater confidence to contribute meaningfully through her career.

Her experience reflects the purpose of Ok Tedi’s Graduate Development Scheme: investing in young Papua New Guineans and creating pathways to strengthen individual careers and the nation’s future workforce.

This year’s graduating cohort included engineers, scientists, accountants, health professionals, communications practitioners and tradespeople equipped with skills to contribute to Papua New Guinea’s development.

General Manager People and Culture Kevin Russell said investing in people remained one of the company’s most important responsibilities.

“Every graduate represents an investment in the future of Papua New Guinea. The skills acquired today will not only support our business but also contribute to industries, communities and organisations throughout the country.”

As graduates celebrated with those who supported them, the ceremony highlighted how the benefits of mining extend beyond the resources extracted from the ground.

They are also reflected in opportunities created, careers developed and lives transformed through education, training and meaningful employment.

For Ms. Ntumy and her fellow graduates, graduation marks the beginning of a new chapter in their professional lives.

For their families, it represents the reward for years of sacrifice and belief. For Papua New Guinea, it signals another generation of professionals ready to contribute their skills, talents and ambitions to the country’s future.
