Waigani Parish finalizes preparations as ordination of Deacon David Tiko Oala draws near

Before the priesthood ordination of Deacon David Tiko Oala. O Carm, the Mary Queen of Pacific Parish in Waigani has completed final preparations for what is set to be one of its largest celebrations this year.

Speaking to our reporter, Mathias Lasia said preparations began in March and spanned two months of coordinated work.

Lasia is the Chairman of the Ordination Organizing Committee.

Subcommittees handling liturgy, hospitality, security, and logistics have confirmed all arrangements are in place for Saturday, 2 May 2026.

“The subcommittees and those assigned specific roles have done their part. The ordination is a go ahead,” Lasia said.

The MQP Church grounds are expected to be filled to capacity, with an anticipated attendance of three thousand people from across the Archdiocese of Port Moresby.

The ordination Mass will mark a milestone for both the parish and the Carmelite Order in Papua New Guinea.

A welcome banner outside the church displays the theme: “A Call to serve God with love in the heart of Jesus and Mary.”

Deacon David, who has served in youth ministry during his formation, will begin his full sacramental ministry as a priest of the Order of Carmelites.

Parish Priest Fr. John Maino called the event “a blessing for our parish and for PNG.”

The liturgy will blend traditional hymns with local cultural elements.

Volunteers and parish groups have been working since dawn to ready the venue.

Fr. David is expected to take up his first assignment within the Archdiocese in the coming weeks.
