MOTHER, OFFICER, ACHIEVER: EVELYN BASSE DEFIES ODDS TO GRADUATE

The path to education is rarely smooth, but for Evelyn Basse, a dedicated mother and serving police constable from Madang, the journey back to study was a testament to unwavering determination.
Proving that being a motherhood doesn’t stop her from pursuing her educational goals in life.
Ms. Basse beamed with pride as she celebrated her academic triumph at the Sir John Guise Stadium Indoor, graduating with a Diploma in Data Analysis and Business Intelligence at the DATECH Learning Center’s 14th Graduation ceremony on Wednesday.
In an exclusive interview with the PNG SUN, Ms. Basse candidly shared the multifaceted challenges she navigated daily.
Balancing the demands of her role as a police constable, the responsibilities of motherhood to her six-year-old daughter, household duties, and a rigorous academic workload often pushed her to her limits.
“The reality is, there were times I would study and complete assignments until the break of dawn, then head to the office with weary eyes,” Ms. Basse revealed to the PNG SUN.
“This achievement feels like a hard-earned reward for two years of relentless effort, demanding significant commitment and personal sacrifice.”
Her message to others echoed her own tenacity: “No one will push you; you must find the inner drive to propel yourself towards your life goals.”
For Ms. Basse, this diploma is more than just a qualification; it’s a crucial steppingstone towards her long-term aspiration of leading the cadet office.
In the immediate future, however, her sights are set on achieving the rank of officer in charge.
Drawing on her nine years of experience as a Police Constable within the Department of Human Resource Development since her initial graduation in 2017, Ms. Basse highlighted the Police Department’s growing recognition of data management’s vital role in analyzing DNA, informing ranking processes, and establishing promotion criteria.
This understanding led to their sponsorship of her studies, acknowledging her foundational knowledge from Grade 12 as a key factor in her eventual success.
With a blend of practical experience and her newly acquired diploma, Ms. Basse confidently asserted to the PNG SUN her expectation of securing a significant position before reaching her ten-year milestone in the force.
In closing, Ms. Basse expressed heartfelt gratitude to her husband for his unwavering support throughout her educational journey, acknowledging his crucial role in helping her reach this significant milestone.
Her story serves as an inspiring reminder that dedication and perseverance can conquer even the most demanding of circumstances.
