PM MARAPE: A NEW, SUSTAINABLE CHAPTER FOR OK TEDI & WESTERN

Prime Minister, James Marape has called for a renewed and people-focused agreement for the Ok Tedi mine following the CMCA Extension Review Working Group Meeting in Port Moresby.
He thanked all landowners, leaders, and stakeholders for their contributions.
He emphasized the importance of environmental sustainability, equity, and long-term benefits for Western Province.
As Ok Tedi marks 40 years of operation, PM Marape acknowledged its role in supporting PNG’s economy, especially after the Bougainville Copper Mine closure in 1988.
Reflecting on past trust fund management, he stressed accountability and transparency in resource use, urging a unified development approach aligned with the Western Province Development Plan.
PM Marape outlined key priorities for the revised CMCA, including better environmental management, fairer benefit sharing, stronger local business participation, tax credit reform, and planning for a post-mine economy.
“With Ok Tedi expected to run until 2050, we must invest wisely for current and future generations,” he said. “Let’s build a model that benefits our people, respects the land, and honors God.”
He urged all stakeholders to work together to leave a lasting, positive legacy for Western Province and Papua New Guinea.
