Customers raise concerns about automatic renewal deductions by Digicel PNG

Customers have expressed growing concern over Digicel PNG’s automatic renewal system, alleging that prepaid credit is being deducted without clear, informed, and ongoing consent.

Concerned consumers have taken to social media claim the auto-renewal feature continues to deduct credit without transparent disclosure, adequate prior notification, or an easy-to-use opt-out mechanism.

They argue that such practices undermine their ability to control prepaid balances and make informed choices about subscribed services.

The auto renewal has exposed protection issues including a lack of informed consent, unfair or deceptive trade conduct, and possible breaches of established consumer rights.

Customers also contend that automatic deductions without explicit authorization may amount to unlawful enrichment at their expense.

Consumers are calling on Digicel PNG to immediately review-and where necessary suspend-any automatic renewal processes that do not operate with explicit and continuing customer approval.

They further urge relevant regulatory authorities NICTA, ICCC and others to investigate whether the current system complies with Papua New Guinea’s consumer protection laws and telecommunications regulations.
