Wohengu reappointed as Secretary for Foreign Affairs

Elias Wohengu has been re-appointed as Secretary for the Department of Foreign Affairs for a second consecutive term.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Justin W. Tkatchenko made the announcement in a statement this morning.

The decision, ratified by the National Executive Council (NEC) under Decision No. 27/2026, mandates Mr. Wohengu to lead the Department for another four years, effective 17 May 2026.

This decision, Minister Tkatchenko said, underscores the Marape-Rosso Government’s steadfast confidence in Mr. Wohengu’s strategic vision and his distinguished service to the Independent State of Papua New Guinea.

“Since taking office in May 2022, Secretary Wohengu has been a cornerstone of the nation’s diplomatic machinery.

His tenure has been defined by the successful negotiation and ratification of critical bilateral agreements, strengthening ties with key development partners and enhancing PNG’s sovereign interests globally,” he said.

“Mr. Wohengu’s professional wisdom and extensive experience have been instrumental in our recent diplomatic successes,” stated Minister Tkatchenko.

“His reappointment is a clear testament to the Government’s unwavering trust in his leadership. Under his guidance, the Department and our overseas missions have demonstrated remarkable resilience and strategic growth.”

The next four years represent a pivotal period for Papua New Guinea’s foreign policy. Minister Tkatchenko emphasized that the continuity of Mr. Wohengu’s stewardship is vital for maintaining the nation’s momentum on the global stage.

“I look forward to our continued partnership,” the Minister added. “Together, we shall strive to achieve the best outcomes for our people and ensure that Papua New Guinea remains a proactive and respected voice in international affairs.”

Minister Tkatchenko extends his best wishes to Secretary Wohengu for his continued success in this vital role as he begins his new term in May.
