Police have confirmed they are ready to roll out a major traffic enforcement operation starting April 1, 2026, targeting ongoing lawlessness on our roads.
Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police (NCD/Central), Chief Superintendent Benjamin Turi, says authorities are now fully prepared-with support from the Road Traffic Authority (RTA)-to crack down on offenders.

The Waigani Police Station cell block has been renovated and will be used to detain traffic offenders during the operation.
Key Focus Areas:
• PMV buses must not park at bus stops — pick up and move
• Buses doing short routes instead of full routes will be monitored
• Illegal freeway use by buses will not be tolerated
• Vehicles operating without PMV permits must stop immediately
• Defective vehicles and reckless drivers are already being tracked
Mr. Turi stressed that enough awareness has already been done, but many drivers continue to ignore the law.
“People are aware but are too ignorant. We are watching and taking note,” he said.
Police say at least 20 offenders are arrested daily, and this number is expected to rise as enforcement intensifies.
Passengers are urged to avoid boarding illegal buses, especially those using the freeway, as you may be forced to walk if caught during operations.
This operation aims to restore order, improve safety, and ensure everyone uses the roads responsibly.
