Mt Hagen Specialist Hospital in Western Highlands Province has proudly received two brand-new vehicles from the visionary leadership of Governor Wai Rapa recently.
As part of the provincial government’s focus on improving healthcare services, a total of K500,000 was allocated to the Western Highlands Provincial Health Authority (WHPHA) for the purchase of a 25-seater coaster bus and a 10-seater Toyota Land Cruiser.

These vehicles will support both hospital staff transport and operational needs across the province.
The presentation of the vehicles coincided with the hospital’s 60th anniversary celebrations and was also timed as an Easter gift to the WHPHA.
This initiative follows a commitment Governor Rapa made during the World Nurses Day celebrations in Mt Hagen last year.
Speaking at the presentation, Governor Wai Rapa emphasized the government’s commitment to healthcare.
“Health is a very important part of our government’s priorities, and this support will continue to enhance the quality of healthcare across the province,” he said in a statement.
Governor Rapa also acknowledged the expertise of the province’s specialized medical officers and clinical staff, noting that their dedication ensures better healthcare delivery for the people of Western Highlands.
“Hagen Hospital’s top national ranking for two consecutive years (2023–2024) reflects the commitment of its staff and the strong governance of the Authority board and management,” he added.
The Governor further thanked the WHPHA Board and management, under the chairmanship of Sam Koim, for the remarkable improvements achieved in healthcare delivery in the province and across the Highlands region.
Acting CEO of the WHPHA, Jane Holden, expressed her gratitude for the timely support from the Provincial Government.
“This is exactly the kind of support we need to bring healthcare services closer to our people,” Holden said.
She added that in her eight years at the WHPHA, this was the first direct support of this kind from the Provincial Government, while acknowledging that previous administrations had also assisted the hospital in various ways.
The new vehicles are expected to significantly enhance transport for health workers, strengthen operational capacity, and improve the delivery of healthcare services to communities across the province.
