The National Capital District Commission (NCDC), in partnership with Bomana Correctional Services, has carried out a major community clean-up exercise in Port Moresby as part of ongoing efforts to improve urban cleanliness and support detainee rehabilitation.
The initiative saw 30 detainees from Bomana’s Minimum-Security Unit work alongside eight Correctional Services officers and NCDC personnel from the Sports, Youth and Civic Engagement Branch and the Waste Management Branch.
The clean-up operation covered key sections of the city, beginning at Croton Street in Waigani and ending at City Hall.
NCDC’s Waste Management Branch supported the exercise by supplying garbage bags, personal protective equipment, and rubbish collection services to ensure the successful removal of waste from public areas.
Thomas Marinae, Detainees Rehabilitation and Reform Officer with NCDC’s Sports, Youth and Civic Engagement Branch, said the program was designed to promote environmental responsibility while providing detainees with meaningful opportunities to contribute to society.
He thanked PNG Correctional Services and Bomana Correctional Services for their continued partnership in community-based rehabilitation programs.
“Initiatives like this not only help keep Port Moresby clean and safe but also allow detainees to contribute positively to the community and reconnect with society,” Mr. Marinae said.

The clean-up campaign follows a recent food donation made by NCDC’s Sports, Youth and Civic Engagement Branch to Bomana Correctional Services, further strengthening cooperation between the two institutions in supporting detainee welfare and rehabilitation.
