New Ireland Governor Byron Chan has congratulated People’s Progress Party leader Douglas Tomuriesa on his appointment as Minister for Civil Aviation, describing it as recognition of his experience and leadership.
Mr. Tomuriesa, the Member for Kiriwina-Goodenough, was sworn in at Government House on Tuesday following the recent Cabinet reshuffle.
Governor Chan said in a statement last Friday that the appointment reflects the confidence placed in Mr. Tomuriesa and wished him success in his new portfolio.
“On behalf of the people of New Ireland and the People’s Progress Party family, I extend my warmest congratulations to my colleague and friend, Hon. Douglas Tomuriesa, on his appointment as Minister for Civil Aviation,” Governor Chan said.
“Douglas has served the country with commitment over many years, and I have no doubt he will bring that same level of dedication and professionalism to this important portfolio.”
Governor Chan also acknowledged the People’s Progress Party’s contribution to national development, saying the appointment continues the party’s tradition of serving Papua New Guinea.
Founded by the late Grand Chief Sir Julius Chan, the People’s Progress Party has played a major role in the country’s political and economic development over several decades.
“The People’s Progress Party has always been about responsible leadership, national development and putting the interests of our people first,” Governor Chan said.
“Douglas Tomuriesa’s appointment is another example of the confidence placed in our party’s ability to contribute to the country’s progress.”
Governor Chan also paid tribute to the legacy of the late Grand Chief Sir Julius Chan, saying his leadership established the People’s Progress Party as one of Papua New Guinea’s enduring political movements.
He reaffirmed New Ireland’s commitment to working closely with the National Government to strengthen aviation services and infrastructure across the country.
