Wewak MP surrenders son to police over alleged murder

Wewak MP Stanley Samban has surrendered his son to police following the alleged murder of a man in Wewak, East Sepik Province, as investigations continue into the incident that occurred over the weekend.

East Sepik Provincial Police Commander Superintendent Christopher Tamari confirmed that the victim, Richmond Aaron, died on Sunday at Boram Provincial Hospital after sustaining serious injuries during an alleged attack in the early hours of Saturday.

Police launched an investigation after relatives of the deceased lodged a formal complaint naming several suspects, including the son of the Wewak MP.

Superintendent Tamari in a statement said MP Samban informed police that his son was involved in the incident and pledged to cooperate fully with authorities by ensuring he and the other suspects were handed over for investigation and possible prosecution.

The MP subsequently travelled to Wewak to facilitate their surrender.

According to preliminary police reports, Aaron was allegedly found in a bedroom at a family home in Kreer Valley, Wewak.

Police allege he was engaged in sexual intercourse with his cousin, who is the daughter of MP Samban and sister of the main suspect.

The confrontation that followed allegedly resulted in Aaron being seriously assaulted.

Aaron was rushed to Boram Provincial Hospital for treatment but later died from his injuries.

Speaking during the surrender, MP Samban said he would not use his position to shield his son from the law.

“No one is above the law, and I will not protect my son using my position. I am not condoning the matter. Law is for everyone, and anyone who breaches laws must be dealt with accordingly,” he said.

Superintendent Tamari commended the MP for cooperating with police and assisting with the surrender of the suspects.

He described MP Samban as “a true leader who takes law and order seriously” and said his actions had saved police considerable time and resources that would otherwise have been spent locating and apprehending those involved.

Police are continuing investigations and preparing charges against the suspects.
