Prime Minister James Marape has ordered an urgent assessment of undersea volcanic activity in waters around Manus Province and directed government agencies to provide a full report on the situation amid concerns about public safety and marine transport.
Mr. Marape said a team would be deployed to assess conditions in affected areas, determine the extent of the volcanic activity and recommend appropriate government responses.
The Prime Minister in a statement said reports of undersea volcanic discharges surfacing in Manus waters had raised concerns among island communities and people who rely on sea transport, with authorities moving to gather detailed information on potential risks.
He also urged communities living near affected waters to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary sea travel while government agencies continue monitoring the situation and assessing its impact.
“I have instructed my Chief of Staff to write immediately to disaster authorities and relevant agencies so that we receive a full report by tomorrow on what is happening,” Mr. Marape said.
“We will dispatch a team to assess the situation on the ground, take stock of developments, and determine how best government can respond.”
Mr. Marape said reports of volcanic discharges surfacing in waters around Manus were affecting movement and creating uncertainty among communities.
“We understand that discharges from this undersea volcanic activity are affecting movement, traffic, and creating uncertainty amongst our people,” he said.
“Our immediate concern is the safety and wellbeing of island communities in and around Manus, particularly those closest to the affected areas.”
The Prime Minister said government agencies would continue to closely monitor developments and provide further advice as more information becomes available.
“We want a total assessment of what is happening and how government can best prepare our people for the worst-case scenario, if necessary, or help them live safely with whatever discharges are currently taking place,” he said.
Mr. Marape appealed to communities living near affected waters to remain alert until authorities provide further guidance.
“I appeal to all island communities to remain on alert, avoid going out to sea, and remain on land until government authorities can provide proper advice and clearance regarding the effects of this volcanic activity,” he said.
He assured affected communities that government agencies were mobilizing resources to better understand the situation and ensure public safety remained the highest priority.
“Government stands ready to assist our people and ensure all necessary measures are taken as we continue monitoring developments closely,” Mr. Marape said.
