PHA Managers complete leadership training to strengthen health services

Seventy-two (72) middle management staff of the East New Britain Provincial Health Authority (ENB PHA) have completed a week-long management development workshop aimed at strengthening leadership, planning and service delivery across the province’s health sector.

The training, facilitated by the Health Services Sector Development Project (HSSDP), focused on improving managerial performance, operational planning, budgeting and strategic decision-making.

It forms part of the ENB PHA’s ongoing efforts to build leadership capacity among its workforces.

Acting Public Health Director Joachim Kais said in a statement the training had equipped managers with practical skills in communication, performance management, mentoring, coaching and team leadership, enabling them to better manage resources and support frontline health services.

This is the third time that ENB PHA has enabled both senior executive and middle management staff to undergo such leadership capacity-building training.

Lead facilitator Peter Baran of HSSDP said the program provided participants with a broader understanding of the role of a Provincial Health Authority and the minimum standards required in health service delivery.

“This training will improve PHA managers’ performance to be more effective managers, role models and future health service leaders who can create high-performing teams,” Mr. Baran said.

He said the training was designed to help managers develop realistic operational work plans and budgets while shifting from an operational focus to a more strategic perspective.

The management training used adult and action-learning techniques, combining theory, group discussions and self-reflection exercises.

Mr. Kais said participants gained a deeper understanding of management practices and would now be able to apply a range of techniques in communication, motivation, mentoring, coaching, counselling, discipline, meeting management and performance management.

He encouraged staff to first develop self-management skills before leading others in their respective workplaces.

“You cannot manage others if you cannot manage yourself. Priorities your time to manage resources and funding,” he said.

A similar training program is scheduled for senior executive management staff in October.
