PNG Prime Minister James Marape has congratulated the Government and people of the Solomon Islands on the country’s 48th Independence Anniversary, reaffirming Papua New Guinea’s commitment to strengthening its longstanding Melanesian partnership with its Pacific neighbor.
In a statement marking the occasion, PM Marape said Papua New Guinea proudly joined Solomon Islands in celebrating the milestone, describing the two countries as “Melanesian wantoks” united by shared history, culture and decades of close cooperation.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Papua New Guinea, I extend our heartfelt congratulations to Prime Minister Matthew Wale, his government and the people of Solomon Islands on this joyous occasion,” Mr. Marape said.
He said Solomon Islands gained independence three years after Papua New Guinea, and since then both nations have worked together as sovereign Melanesian states through periods of nation-building, regional cooperation and shared challenges.
“Our relationship goes beyond diplomacy. It is a relationship of family, culture, history and mutual respect. Solomon Islands is not just our neighbor; it is our Melanesian brother and sister,” he said.
Mr. Marape noted that the two countries had celebrated Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence anniversary together last year and said PNG looked forward to joining Solomon Islands again when it marks its Golden Jubilee in 2028.
He reaffirmed Papua New Guinea’s commitment to strengthening ties under the PNG–Solomon Islands Strategic Partnership established following recent discussions with Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale.
Mr. Marape said the partnership would expand cooperation in areas including mining, agriculture, fisheries, trade and investment, while creating more jobs and ensuring greater benefits from the countries’ natural resources.
“Papua New Guinean companies remain among the significant investors in Solomon Islands, and we welcome continued opportunities for partnership in mining, agriculture, fisheries and other productive sectors,” he said.
The Prime Minister also acknowledged past and present leaders of both countries for nurturing one of the Pacific’s closest bilateral relationships and advancing Melanesian solidarity, peace and regional development.
“As you celebrate 48 years of independence today, we look forward to standing alongside you once again in two years’ time as you mark your 50th Independence Anniversary,” Mr. Marape said.
He wished the Government and people of Solomon Islands continued peace, unity and prosperity.
