UPNG students question K4,500 school fee increase

The University of Papua New Guinea Students Representative Council (SRC) is now courting the university administration over the proposed school fee increase for next year, after its president was not present when the UPNG Council made the decision.
The major issue discussed was the increase in school fees, which students said had moved from the previous K3,115 fee to K3,585, before subsequently reaching K4,500.
In 2009, the compulsory school fee for both day and boarding students was around K1,400.
In a statement SRC President Ephraim Kliwolo said the student body must have a greater say in decisions that directly affect students, particularly on school fees.
The issue has sparked renewed tension between students and the university administration, with the SRC pushing for further discussions following the second student forum held on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at the Main Forum Square.
UPNG Vice Chancellor Professor Ian Findlay was present to respond to questions raised by students and the SRC following a petition against the fee increase.
Students questioned the university administration over the lack of prior consultation, the impact of the increase on students and families, and delays in the payment of TESAS and Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) assistance.
SRC President Ephraim Kliwolo also asked the administration what flexible measures would be available when TESAS or HELP payments were delayed.
Student leader Lawson Peterson further questioned the absence of SRC involvement in the decision-making process, stating that the SRC has a legal responsibility to represent the interests and voice of students.
Professor Findlay defended the cost of education at UPNG, stating that the university remains comparatively affordable when compared with other institutions.
The forum lasted almost five hours, with SRC executives, four provincial student representatives and close to 1,000 students in attendance.
The SRC will now continue consultations with students before making a submission to the university administration.
