TSC rejects premature claims of Teacher’s Pay rise

The Teaching Service Commission has rejected recent media claims by the Papua New Guinea Teachers Association president regarding a proposed teachers’ pay increase, saying any salary adjustment remains subject to Government approval.

TSC Acting Chairman Maini Mike Ugaia in a statement yesterday said discussions and initial submissions on the 2026–2028 Log of Claims had been presented to the Department of Personnel Management, but any proposed salary adjustments between the TSC and PNGTA remained strictly subject to DPM approval.

He said public declarations about a pay increase before the formal process was completed were premature and unprofessional.

“The statement circulated in the media is untrue and misleading,” Acting Chairman Ugaia said.

“The PNGTA President is advised to withdraw these unauthorized claims immediately. Negotiations are a formal administrative process, and creating false expectations among our hard-working teachers disrupts the stability of our education sector.”

Mr. Ugaia urged teachers throughout Papua New Guinea not to rely on speculative media reports or external announcements regarding their terms and conditions.

He said the TSC remained the sole legal employer and authoritative body responsible for teacher welfare and salary matters.

Teachers were advised to obtain official updates directly from TSC headquarters or through authorized TSC media announcements.

Meanwhile, Chairman Ugaia welcomed teachers back for the commencement of Term 4.

“The Commission extends its profound thanks and appreciation to our nearly 70,000 teachers nationwide for their unwavering commitment and dedication to our students throughout this academic year,” he said.
