K295m El Nino relief funds released as service providers chase payments

Finance Secretary Samuel Penias is calling on all District Development Authorities (DDAs) and Provincial governments to comply with financial requirements when procuring service providers to access El Nino Relief funds.

The funds were disbursed last Tuesday.

He said nearly K295 million was remitted to accounts created mainly for the relief fund.

Mr. Penias said the funds were meant for food rations and El Nino associated items only.

Meanwhile, Secretary Penias told PNG SUN that warrants released to Government departments, agencies and constitutional offices were enough to cover for the third quarter (July to September).

He responded with the above when asked why service providers have been waiting for months to be paid for services rendered to the State.

It was reported locally that some government departments and agencies received warrants till May 2026 only.
