Male boarding students attending the Don Bosco Technological Institute marked the fifth anniversary of Papua New Guinea’s Founding Father, the late Sir Michael Thomas Somare, by rolling up their sleeves for a community clean-up in East Boroko, Port Moresby last week.

The initiative was led by Dormitory Captain Vitalis Tiriman and supported by the prefects, with the aim of giving back to the community while promoting servant leadership-a key value taught by the Salesians of Don Bosco.
The day started early at 6:00am with a rising bell, task allocation and an opening prayer.
Dormitory Vice-Captain Manaseh Hauseng told the students the activity reflected the kind of servant leadership Sir Michael Somare showed throughout his life in service to the nation.
Armed with brooms, rakes and rubbish bags, the boarders split into two groups.
One team cleaned towards the roundabout near Port Moresby Grammar School, while the other started from Shorna Store. Both groups collected litter and cleared debris along the roadside before meeting back at the school gate.
Dormitory caretaker Mr. Immanuel Alu also supported the effort by supplying extra rubbish bags from his own resources and helping guide the students back to the dormitory. Related news: https://www.thepngsun.com/upng-set-to-observe-national-holiday-to-honor-late-sir-michael-somare-2/
The clean-up not only paid tribute to the legacy of Sir Michael Somare, but also strengthened values of responsibility, unity and active citizenship among the young men of De Sales Residence.
