Elder Kipongi urges Christians to recommit to core duties of faith

Elder Eric Kipongi has called on Christians to recommit to four essential duties of Christian life: confronting spiritual evil, caring for the sick, preaching the Kingdom of God, and living a life of faith and sacrifice while waiting for Jesus’ return to take them home.

Presenting his divine service sermon at Sogavare Memorial SDA Church in Gerehu Stage 6, Port Moresby, Eric Kipongi spoke on the theme “Essence of a Christian Life.”

He urges believers to embrace a balanced walk with God that reflects both spiritual strength and practical living.

Grounding his message in Scripture readings, he reminded the congregation of humanity’s origin and eternal hope:

“Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.” (Ecclesiastes 12:7, KJV)

“For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:

And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:” (Job 19:25–26, KJV)

He explained that these passages highlight the dual nature of human life—physical and spiritual—also pointing to Genesis 2:7, where God forms man from the dust and breathes into him the breath of life.

Elder Kipongi emphasized that Christians are called to operate in both realms.

Referring to Luke 9:1–3, he noted that Jesus gave His disciples authority over evil spirits and diseases, a responsibility that remains relevant today.

Drawing on Ephesians 6:10–19, he said believers must recognize the ongoing spiritual battle against “principalities and powers of darkness.”

He also highlighted Christ’s healing ministry, including the account in Luke 9:37–42, where Jesus healed a demon-possessed boy, demonstrating power over both spiritual oppression and physical illness.

Despite challenges, he also urged believers to remain steadfast. “Even in sickness, our faith must not be shaken,” he said.

Encouraging gratitude, he reminded worshippers to thank God for good health, children, and material blessings, describing the last two as added gifts from God.

Central to his message was the call to preach the Kingdom of God.

Citing Luke 9:2, Luke 9:19–20, and Luke 21:22, he affirmed that Jesus Christ is at the heart of the Gospel, sent to die and rise again for humanity’s salvation.

He also referenced the transfiguration in Luke 9:28–36, where Jesus was declared the Son of God.
