For Mara Tender, walking across the graduation podium at the Sir John Guise Indoor Stadium in Port Moresby last week was more than just receiving a degree-it was the culmination of years marked by hardship, resilience, and determination.
The 26-year-old graduate from Western Highlands Province was among those who graduated last Monday during the institution’s 71st graduation ceremony, earning a bachelor’s degree in science from the School of Natural and Physical Sciences.
Mara’s journey began in 2020 when he enrolled through the university’s external program.
After spending two to three years studying at the Open Campus, he transitioned into full-time studies in his second year, majoring in biology.
His academic foundation, however, was built much earlier in Port Moresby, where he completed his primary education at Carr Memorial Adventist Primary School before attending Koiari Park Adventist Secondary School for Grades 9 and 10 and later continued to Port Moresby National High School.
Mara’s parents separated when he was still young, leaving him without a stable family environment.
His father later remarried, but nightmare hit when his father passed away, and his stepmother eventually left.
These events forced Mara into a life of uncertainty at an early age.
His grandmother became his primary caregiver—a mother figure in the absence of stability at home.
Tragedy then struck. His grandmother passed on while he was doing his third year, leaving a void in his life.
Yet amid the instability, one constant remained—family support.
Mara credits his aunt, Natasha Tender, who stepped in to become both mother and father to him and his younger siblings.
Alongside their grandfather, Tender Wak, she provided the care and encouragement that kept the family grounded.
“Life was tough,” Mara reflected. “But at least our auntie became the mom and dad of the family.”
Despite the challenges, Mara pressed on, determined to change the trajectory of his life and that of his siblings.
As the firstborn, he carried not only his own ambitions but also the hopes of his family.
This year marked a significant milestone—not just for Mara, but for the Tender family.
His younger sister, Vivian Tender, also graduated, earning a bachelor’s degree in Physiotherapy from Divine Word University.
“Everything my big brother said is the exact same as me,” Vivian shared.
“We thank our mom and dad, Natasha Tender, our grandfather, and our immediate family who stood by us.”
Their dual achievement stands as a powerful testament to perseverance and the impact of strong family support, even in the face of adversity.
Looking ahead, Mara remains focused on the future. With his degree now secured, he hopes to find stable employment and eventually further his studies.
His story is not just one of academic success, but of resilience—a reminder that even from the most difficult beginnings, determination and support can lead to remarkable outcomes.
