Gerehu Secondary School in Port Moresby has received more than 1,000 new books to strengthen its library resources and support learning for students from Grades 7 to 12.
The donation was delivered through a partnership between the University of Papua New Guinea Hagen Urban Students Association and literacy organization Buk Bilong Pikinini, following a book collection drive that gathered 1,000 titles, with additional books contributed by UPNG students.
The books have been catalogued and are now available for student use.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, final year law student Elijah Kasty highlighted the importance of reading in improving academic performance and encouraged students to take advantage of the new resources.
He quoted former South African leader Nelson Mandela, saying, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
A Gerehu Secondary School staff member thanked the association and Buk Bilong Pikinini for the contribution, saying the new books would support students’ learning and development.
A representative of the UPNG Hagen Urban Students Association said the partnership with Buk Bilong Pikinini was instrumental in making the donation possible.
The school administration confirmed the books are available for students during classes and private study sessions, with the initiative aimed at improving English literacy and strengthening students’ preparation for national examinations.
The donation adds to the school’s existing library collection and highlights community efforts to promote education and literacy in Port Moresby.
