A major K8.5 million water supply infrastructure project was launched on Monday in Ward 1 of the Moresby North-West electorate to improve access to reliable and sustainable potable water for eight communities.
The project will benefit Hanuabada, Elevala, Gabi, Mirigini (Badihagwa), Tatana-Araira, Baruni, Koukou and Sasiva, with works focused on rehabilitating, upgrading and expanding the existing water supply network.

The project is fully funded through a partnership involving K6.5 million from the Moresby North-West District Services Improvement Program (DSIP), K1 million from NCD Governor Powes Parkop and K1 million from Prime Minister James Marape, bringing the total project investment to K8.5 million.
Moresby North-West MP Lohia Boe Samuel said the project would address long-standing water supply problems affecting communities across Ward 1.
“This project represents a significant step forward in ensuring the well-being of our communities in Ward 1,” Mr. Samuel said.
He said the project would replace ageing distribution pipelines, expand the network and refurbish water tanks and pump stations to meet the needs of a growing population.
The project is also expected to reduce water rationing and improve reliability, with the long-term goal of providing communities with a continuous 24-hour water supply.
Mr. Samuel said the initiative would introduce proper metering and billing to reduce water losses and improve accountability for water supplied to communities currently classified as unbilled consumers.
The project will also improve water delivery to elevated communities and install fire hydrants to strengthen community safety and emergency response.
Mr. Samuel said Wards 7, 8, 10 and 11 would follow after the successful completion of the Ward 1 project, further extending water infrastructure improvements across the Moresby North-West electorate.

He said the electorate remained committed to delivering sustainable water solutions and improving essential services for its communities.
